Wrocław is a city known for its long history, many different buildings, and special atmosphere. Among its many landmarks, one of the most important is Tumski Bridge, also called the “Bridge of Lovers.” At first, it may look like just a normal bridge over the Oder River, but it hides many interesting stories. It is also closely connected with Ostrów Tumski – the oldest part of Wrocław. This text will tell you about the bridge’s history, why it is important, and some secrets and fun facts that make it such a special place.
The history of the bridge
Tumski Bridge was built between 1888 and 1892. Before that, there was an old wooden bridge in the same place. For centuries, it connected Ostrów Tumski – the religious center with churches and the cathedral – with Piasek Island and the rest of the city.
The new steel bridge was stronger and looked more modern for the 19th century. From the beginning, it had more than just a practical role. It joined two worlds: the sacred (churches, bishops’ houses) and the everyday (trade, shops, people’s lives). Even today, it is a natural link between these two sides of the city.
How the bridge looks
Tumski Bridge is a steel bridge with arches and lattices – a typical style of the 19th century. Back then it was modern, but today it is a historic treasure.
One of its most unique details are the gas lanterns. They are still lit every evening by a real lamplighter in a special cloak and hat. This is very rare in Europe today. Thanks to that, the bridge in the evening feels almost magical, like in a fairy tale.
The Bridge of Lovers
One of the most famous traditions of Tumski Bridge is the love locks. Couples come here, attach a padlock with their names to the fence, and throw the key into the river. This means their love will last forever.
This tradition started in the 2000s but quickly became very popular. Tens of thousands of locks hung on the bridge! They looked nice but were very heavy, so the city sometimes had to remove them to protect the bridge. Still, couples keep coming back to continue this tradition.
Secrets and legends
There are many stories about Tumski Bridge. One legend says that when young married couples cross the bridge at night without fear, they will have a long and happy life together.
The bridge is also famous because of the lamplighter, who lights the gas lanterns every evening. In most cities, this job no longer exists, but in Wrocław you can still see it with your own eyes.
The bridge in culture and art
Because of its beautiful location and romantic feel, the bridge often appears in movies, photos, and cultural events. It was even used in the movie Bridge of Spies. Local artists and photographers also love it.
It is also one of the most visited places in Wrocław. People come here for walks, wedding photos, or romantic meetings.
Fun facts
Tumski Bridge is now only for people – no cars can drive on it.
The lamplighter lights more than 100 lanterns every evening, which takes about 2 hours.
The love locks weighed several tons before they were removed.
The bridge is in the heart of Ostrów Tumski, the oldest part of Wrocław.
Tumski Bridge is not just a steel construction over the river. It is one of the main symbols of Wrocław, connecting history with today. Its architecture, legends, love locks, lamplighter, and beautiful location make it a magical place. A walk across the bridge is a must for anyone visiting Wrocław – a city sometimes called the “Venice of the North.”
